The moon is a powerful energetic body that we can work with to not only cleanse and recharge crystals but ourselves.

Full and new moon rituals can have a profound effect on your life. For thousands of years people have used the cycles of the moon to release energetic blocks which are holding them back and to also add power to their intentions to manifest the new into their lives.

Why do a ritual?

In reality I believe you don't need to do a ritual as the power lies in your intention. But given the way most people think, most of us have a need for ceremony, ritual and story to add importance and meaning to something - which in turn gives us a stronger intention. Which is what does the work. You may be one of the few people who doesn't need any form of ritual as your intentions are strong enough already. But for the rest of us a little 'magic' in our lives goes a long way. I do believe that setting intentions during a full or new moon carries extra punch but I also believe that these 'rituals' (for lack of a better word) can be performed at any time that is significant to you (eg anniversary, end of the year, etc).

Full moon ritual

Crystals for protection The full moon is the perfect time to say goodbye to anything that no longer serves you. The power of the full moon will aid you to release any blockages you may have as it symbolizes the end of something. It's wonderful at helping you to release old patterns, behaviours, people, things, emotions, pain etc that may be holding you back. If you are feeling stuck in life or are resistant to change - despite wanting it - then you have some crap that needs to be let go of. Afterall - how can the new come in when all the space is being taken up by the old?!

A popular ritual and one that I do on occasions is:

  1. Write down on a piece or pieces of paper all the things that you want to release. I've found it more useful to write each issue on a seperate piece of paper so that I can focus on it in step 4. If you are going to do this over a open fire you could even write your baggage onto to sticks.
  2. Build a fire outside under the full moon (if appropriate & check local fire warnings before doing so). If you can't do it outside or on an open fire - you can always use the flame of a candle and do the following over a metal sink or another fire proof area. **PLEASE BE CAREFUL when dealing with naked flames!!**
  3. Surround yourself with the smoke from a Smudge Stick (a bundle of dried White Sage leaves available from many places) - then put this out in some dirt/sand.
  4. Take a few moments to call in your guides and reach a place of peace. Then one piece of paper/stick at a time, read aloud what you have written (or say it to yourself if that's more to your liking) - setting your intention to release this thing from your life - and then throw the paper/stick into the fire. If you are indoors using a candle carefully light the paper before placing it into your fire proof container to burn out.
  5. As each piece of item burns close off that intention with some words that have meaning for you. For example "And so it is" or "Be gone". Words carry meaning and power for us so use them.
  6. End the ritual by again surrounding yourself with smoke from a Smudge Stick and give thanks to the universe, the moon and your guides.

There is no right or wrong way to do it. Put as much or as little ceremony into it as you like. Just connect with your intention as deeply as you can because its the intention you have behind it that matters. Meditate before hand, put on some music, use crystals or get dressed up - what ever you need to make it more meaningful for you.

New moon ritual

Just as the full moon is all about letting go of your baggage - the new moon is all about bringing in the new. The new opportunities, new love and healing that we might desire.

A ritual that I like is essentially the same as the full moon ritual except instead of writing out your issues you write out your wishes. When writing out an intention I suggest:

  1. Write down on a piece or pieces of paper all the things that you want to bring into your life. I've found it more useful to write each item on a seperate piece of paper so that I can focus on it in step 4. If you are going to do this over a open fire you could even write your wishes onto to sticks.
  2. Build a fire outside under the new moon (if appropriate & check local fire warnings before doing so).
Then one piece of paper/stick at a time, read aloud what you have written (or say it to yourself if that's more to your liking) - setting your intention to bring this thing into your life - and then throw the paper/stick into the fire. If you are indoors using a candle carefully light the paper before placing it into your fire proof container to burn out.
  5. As each piece of item burns close off that intention with some words that have meaning for you. For example "And so it is". Words carry meaning and power for us so use them.
  6. End the ritual by again surrounding yourself with smoke from a Smudge Stick and give thanks to the universe, the moon and your guides.

As with the fullmoon ritual there is no right or wrong way to do it. Put as much or as little ceremony into it as you like - make an altar if that helps. Just connect with your intention as deeply as you can because its the intention you have behind it that matters.
